The UCT 959 – This innovative product is specifically designed for Instantaneous water heaters and will provide a controlled hot water recirculation system for any new or existing home. The UCT 959 Instantaneous Heater Circulation Pump has a timer and is temperature controlled. . . so no more water wasted while waiting for hot water to arrive with the advantages and convenience of instantaneous hot water at all fixtures in the home!

The strap-on temperature sensor regulates the system temperature and limits the length of time the instantaneous heater will be operating during the recirculation period. The system will maintain a constant temperature at all fixtures in the home providing the immediate availability of hot water. The built-in 24 hour timer also allows you to select the times of day that you wish to have the system cycle. The timer is programmable in ½ hour increments and multiple on/off settings can be programmed. A built-in ball valve and check valve allows for quick and easy installation and service.

INSTALLATION

The Laing UCT-959-INSTANTANEOUS Heater Pump is a timer and temperature controlled circulator. Both the timer and the temperature sensor must be used for the proper operation of the pump and heater.

  1. Select the sink under which to connect the recirculation line (the sink where the hot water takes longest to arrive which is usually the sink farthest from the water heater).
  2. Plan your installation. Decide on the course of the recirculation pipe (also determining the length of the pipe required). The return line should be connected to the water heater cold water inlet line (tee fitting required) See belowInstallation Image
  3. Shut off power to heater and the water supply  to the house.
  4. Drain the plumbing lines by opening the faucets in the house. Close the valve on the cold water supply line to the water heater (this may be done at the meter).
  5. Connect the return line at the last faucet/basin riser and run to the water heater. Tee the return line as close to the end of the hot water supply line as possible and run the return line back to the water heater.
  6. Installing the pump. Remove 3/4" copper tails, union nuts and motor from the pump housing. Attach the copper tails and union nuts to the return pipe and solder the tails on. DO NOT solder the 3/4" tails while connected to the pump housing as the pump housing contains plastic components which will melt.
  7. Fit pump housing without motor attach. Close the shut-off valve on the inlet side of the pump and turn on the water supply to the house.
  8. Flush system of debris. Before reattaching the pump motor, open the shut-off valve on the inlet side of the pump housing and let water flow through the housing. Use a bucket to catch the water. Let the water run long enough to clear all sand, solder pellets, plumbers tape flakes, etc. from the lines. Close the inlet shut-off valve when finished.
  9. Connect the pump motor to the housing. Make sure the rubber o-ring is in place in the housing and the screw ring is securely hand tightened (for 353 models) or that the top housing screws are firmly in place and tightened (959 models). Reopen the shut-off valve or valves and let the water flood the pump housing.
  10. Purge air from the supply line. Turn on the faucet or shower farthest from the water heater. Open the line until you get a good, steady stream of water without sputter or evidence of air.
  11. Purge air from the return line. Connect the pump to the electrical supply. With the pump running, open the hose bib and let water run until the pump is running quietly and there is no sputtering or other evidence of air coming from the hose bib. Close the hose bib. Your system is now in operation. Allow a few minutes for instant hot water to recirculate to all of your faucets.
  12. If you have an timer pump set your timer in accordance with the instructions provided with the pump.

    Do’s and Do Not’s

    Do

    · Install an air vent mounted in a vertical position (if provided).

    · Use ¾” recirculation line piping or tubing.

    · Check to be sure there are no crimps or sharp bends in the recirculation line that would restrict the flow.

    · Be sure all air is purged from the system prior to starting the pump.

    · Use a water conditioner if you have hard water.

    · Be sure the gate valves are open before turning on the pump.

    · Install the pump pumping in upward direction only.

    · Ensure that there are no other valves or PLV in the loop to prevent flow.

    Do Not

    • Use grease or oil to lubricate the pump - it is self-lubricating.

    • Install the pump with the motor above the pump housing.

    • Install the pump, pumping away from the water heater nor pumping downward.

    • Start the pump before the system is full of water and purged of air.

    • Install the pump in the supply line to faucets.

    • Use any pipe size other than ¾” for 959 models.

    • Position the pump at the top of the water heater.

    Notes:

Hard Water Conditions: Use a water conditioner. Hard water can cause scale build-up and eventually reduce the life of the pump and other system components.
